Introduction
S. Hope explores the roots and reach of tino rangatiratanga (sovereignty), a commonly-used Maori word, Political Science Vo 56/1, June 04, whose multiplicities of significant meanings aggravate the NZ political debate. He peels back the onion-like layers, using a rights based framework. Origins need to be identified to justify rights. While many assume that there is common agreement about this, deeper analysis indicates that the there are differing justifications and that the phrase is essentially contested.(continue…)
