JFS Futures Community of Practice: Who We Are and What We Do
A 6-minute speech by Dr Lavonne Leong, presented at the APFN8 Conference on 29 Sept 2022.
Highlights:
It’s becoming urgent to share a futures thinking mindset as widely and quickly as possible, and as accessibly as possible.
What if:
– Futures thinking was readily available in most places, from urban centers to small rural communities?
– The teaching of futures thinking started in high school, or earlier?
– Any teacher who wanted to teach it futures thinking could do so for free, choosing exercises and approaches that felt right for their particular students? What if those same teachers could then also participate in the creation and sharing of knowledge about how to teach futures/foresight?
– What if a great way of teaching futures from a small school in Malaysia could ripple outward to help students in Ghana, or the United States?
How would the practice of teaching futures be changed by these activities?
Many people are working on the problem of how to democratise foresight. The JFS Community of Practice is our attempt to start to answer these questions.
This community is in its earliest days. We are beginning by posting the ongoing results of the Futures Studies in high school in Taiwan project. This project contains exercises taught in the program, and discussions of how they worked in real-world situations.
Through sharing what worked well and didn’t, we can all get better at teaching futures. We also want to build a global discussion space and community.
We welcome contributions from teachers and practitioners all over the world.
