Every year, the postgraduate program in Design of Tomorrow (CENTRO, Mexico City) holds a sound design workshop coordinated by audio producer Leonardo Santiago.

During this creative experience, the students learn and practice sound design tools to recreate atmospheres, soundscapes that evoke different possible futures. Each piece addresses a different issue (aging, fake news, pleasure, learning, among others) and offers the listener the possibility of experiencing future scenarios through attentive listening.

These soundscapes present stories that happen somewhere in the future. Each story raises questions, criticisms, speculations about the future, with which the listener can interact, reflect and formulate their own criteria.

We suggest experimenting with these pieces with headphones and closing your eyes to better appreciate the different layers that make up the sound discourse.

Classroom Space, Bruno Alcántara

The format of basic education in Mexico has managed to evolve a lot in the last few years. New technologies have led to ultra-personalization of content and the emergence of new school dynamics.

New school dynamics, however, in the background there remains a pedagogical structure that does not seem to change with the passage of time. Attending school is no longer limited by the physical space of the classroom. The environment in which the teaching and learning process takes place oscillates between person-to-person experience and virtuality.

TEO©, Hussein Arellano

TEO (Spanish acronym for Experimental Electromagnetic Wave Technology, Tecnología Experimental de Ondas) is a simulation system that allows you to have sex with Artificial Intelligence, analyze the patrons, and generate a prototype according to your tastes and needs. Put on headphones, close your eyes and enjoy the experience.

Trust©, Mercedes Baltazar

We grew up listening to ideologically slanted opinions. Today we want to be first-hand informed, living with the facts without mediation. In Trust we don’t recruit journalists, correspondents, or anchormen: we have a network of citizens who will take you to the place where things are happening in real-time, from the water wars in Sub Saharan Africa to the famine in Dubai. You can Trust© us to care for your physical and mental health; to be informed doesn’t have to affect your day-to-day spirit. We measure your brain waves and heartbeat to act immediately to take you back to a calm state of mind. Get the facts and stay calm with Thrust!

The Future of Bike Commuting, Carlos Carmona

A blink to 2040. In a dynamic and sustainable future, society had a change in consciousness derived from those health problems that devastated a large part of humanity in the previous years (heart and lung diseases, autoimmune diseases, lethal allergies, among other dreaded afflictions). Humanity has adopted a healthier and balanced lifestyle using the bicycle as exercise, means of locomotion, and energy generator.

Forever Indigo, Alejandra Enzástiga

We invite you to the party of the century, where we will gather humans, androids, and robots in the same dome to present the first fashion collection made with smart denim: Forever indigo. Don’t miss the opportunity to see and experience up close this sustainable textile made from prickly pear cactus. Forever Indigo will be your second skin.

Blue Mosaic©, Patricia López

Death is no longer a taboo. It is no longer conceived as a traumatic end but as a transition to another physical, mental and spiritual state. It has become a changeover that closes a cycle to open a new one.

This generates gratitude for what happened and joy for what is to come. There are now transition agencies like Blue Mosaic, which allow citizens to plan their process. Today they can be sure of a dignified crossover, making it possible to turn it into a moment of real Aiglatson, an illuminating evocation for the sweet hereafter. What would their passage from one world to the other sound like?

Yamandú, León Ruiz

I always thought inspiration came within, but now I have another way of thinking. Many say that it’s a cheat but, what if I don’t have other forms of inspiration? What if I am the infinity of my depression? That black hole that makes me do nothing, or wanting something, or even think properly. There are many examples of psychedelics used in such “inspiration” contexts that make me do it. Bufos alvarius, Papaver somniferum, Cannabis sativa, Salvia divinorum, and many more are forms of getting genuine connection with your inner person, ways of overcoming the everyday. Shamans were the first dream workers and the first to ask traditional philosophical questions regarding psychedelics and reality. They use altered states of consciousness to travel into “Dreamtime,” obtaining power and knowledge to heal with or without psychedelics. This “regression cannabis” is quite interesting: someone in 2089 created a new way of daydreaming with your ancestors. I tried it, and it works!!

Explore©, Cecilia Palacios

I am one month away from my fortieth birthday, and I just realized that I have been alone for a decade. In my last attempt to have a loving relationship, I dated a hologram for two years and ended up heartbroken. To cheer me up, my friend Tania sent me a gift by VR-mail. I activated the VR function of my glasses to check it; the subject says “Explore.” It starts with an animation of a white envelope with relaxing music. The envelope opens and comes out of the simulation. I can feel the touch of its lovely texture; the exquisite typography says: “Explore, space just for you.”

Life Goes On, Karina Vega

Given the case of a possible scenario in 2050, the elderly population faces poverty, loneliness, health detriment, and the necessity of a job in a manufacturing facility. Nevertheless, the bond between two human beings (even when artificial) remains and leads to positive emotions, joy, short-term happiness, and positive reactions such as laughter, all of which make life more manageable.

Planet-uncentered Design, Elizabeth Zúñiga

Designers have been taught to consider only human needs, but the excellent design for people has gotten us into trouble without regard for the planet’s peril. In the pursuit of a frictionless user experience, we’ve prioritized usability over everything else, including our health and natural resources. Now, it’s safe to say that human-centered design doesn’t go as planned. We need to start designing in a way that reconciles the needs of all entities, including the planet as one of them. There can be no good life for people without a healthy world.
